Description:

Micah Williams is eighteen years old when a single kiss forces her to question everything she knows about friendship, love, and herself. Micah has never before doubted who she is until she meets Casey, the new student in her English class. Under the guise of friendship, Casey quickly proves to Micah that they have a lot more in common than Micah could have ever imagined. Now Micah must come to terms with her sexuality and her fears that her family and childhood best friend, Emily, will ostracize her. Throughout the process of revealing her true identity, Micah finds herself testing the boundaries of her closest relationships. During this journey, she discovers the meaning of loyalty, bravery, and love. Taking the Lead is a story about the secrets we have, the lies we tell to maintain the false pretense that we are safer when hidden, and that all revelations affect not only ourselves, but also the people around us. It is a story about self-acceptance, tolerance, forgiveness, and love.

Review

"Self-acceptance. Accepting others. Being human...that those invaluable life lessons come in such an engaging, concise novel is reason enough to check out Taking The Lead. I found myself rooting for Micah to find love in the end, both self-love and love from those around her." - Zoe Grimm, The Vodka Press

From the Author

I came out as a lesbian when I sixteen years old. It was one of the most liberating and empowering things I have ever done! However, before that fateful day, I spent countless hours wondering why I was "different." I could never identify with the characters in any of the romance novels I read or the television shows I watched. I eventually learned that, as a writer, I could create the characters that I had always wanted to read about. So that is what I did. Taking the Lead was a lot of fun to write; but, at times I would have to walk away from my computer, because I was overwhelmed by so many emotions. I had to relive what it was like to come out, the fears I had, and the relationships I both forged and forfeited because of my sexuality.

This book, like all of my books, was written from my heart. I want readers to understand that Taking the Lead is a story about self-acceptance and learning to accept others for who they really are. It's a story about learning to understand what it is like to go through this life being who you are and trying to understand why other people are the way they are. Mostly, it's a story about love. It is not simply about the experiences of being gay. It is about the experiences of being human.
